Uganda’s finance ministry has confirmed that hackers breached the Bank of Uganda’s IT systems and transferred 62 billion Ugandan shillings ($16.8 million) out of central bank accounts, though officials say the scale of the theft is smaller than initially reported.
The auditor general and the criminal investigations department are investigating the incident that happened few days ago, report by Uganda parliament.
“It is true that our account was hacked, but not to the extent of what is being reported,” Minister of State for Finance Henry Musasizi told lawmakers Thursday, adding that a report on the incident would be ready in a month. “To avoid misrepresentation of facts, when the audit and CID investigations are finalised, I beg that I come to this house and report.”
Both the central bank and the police declined to comment until the investigation is complete.

According to The New Vision on Thursday, a group identified as "Waste" operating in Southeast Asia reportedly made off with 62 billion shillings ($17 million). However, The Daily Monitor stated the amount was 47.8 billion shillings, with the funds allegedly transferred to accounts in Japan and the UK.
The Monitor further reported on Friday that UK authorities managed to freeze approximately $7 million, although a portion had already been withdrawn by the culprits. In Japan, the group is said to have received $6 million.
“This is alarming because we’re talking about our central bank,” opposition member Joel Ssenyonyi expressed to parliament on Thursday. “I believe it’s essential for the government to clarify the situation so we can fully understand what’s going on.
